SENDING HOME INFORMATION AND NEWS ABOUT EDUCATION (SHINE)
Welcome to our first edition of SHINE.
As I wrote about last week, here at Holy Trinity, we are committed to working together in partnership with parents, teachers, and community members, to create an educational experience that fosters, strengthens, and enhances a variety of learning experiences for your child.
Throughout the years gone by we have held numerous Parent Information Sessions. These sessions have been designed to support the journey of parents/ carers as they negotiate the education of their child. As we continue to navigate this ‘new covid norm’ we are excited to launch a new initiative SHINE (sending home information and news about education).
This platform will give us a new and long-awaited opportunity to reconnect with our parent community by sharing strategies and suggestions for how parents/carers can further assist their child/ren at home.
We hope you find lots of useful information, tips and practical strategies to support your child/ ren in this new platform.
On the 8 August we celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. She is the first saint of Australia and founder of the Sisters of St Joseph. A woman of faith and courage who responded to the needs of the poor and pioneered new ways of Gospel living.
God of all pilgrim people, you raise up women and men to meet the needs of every age. In Mary MacKillop, we celebrate a journey of deep love and sensitivity to your will. Like her, may we learn to grow in appreciation of the fullness of your love and the depth of your mystery.
Help us to transform the ordinariness of our lives as we reach out to others through the daily challenges of our journey towards you.
Amen

Great mathematicians ponder, puzzle, predict, play and prove. They have a growth mindset. Learning mathematics is an important part of the curriculum at Holy Trinity. Teachers know that productive struggle is an important part of the lesson and that the process of learning maths is more important than just answering numerous questions. Practice is also an important phase of a lesson. Reviewing concepts covered daily is slowly becoming an important part of the lesson as teachers explore reciting, recalling, and applying concepts covered.
Family time can be an important time to help with mathematical achievement and practise what is taught in the classroom. Board games and sharing stories with a mathematical focus can contribute to an increase in achievement at school. Books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle as well as 365 Penguins by Jean-Luc Fromental, Leaping Lizards by Stuart Murphy, Math for all seasons: Mind-stretching Maths Riddles by Greg Tang and My Grandmother’s Clock by Geraldine McCaughrean all include mathematical concepts. Reading books as part of the night-time routine can contribute to the mathematical development of children outside the classroom as well as creating a less stressful environment for discussing mathematics.
Below are some ideas for families to try at home to develop children’s mathematical skills.

Maths in the Preschool Program is embedded in our environment, play, provocations and intention teaching opportunities. Foundations of mathematical concepts are learned through the hands-on experiences, curious questioning, experimentation and exploration of the preschoolers.
The children enjoy opportunities both in their indoor and outdoor play to explore Maths and STEM concepts.
K - 2
Counting and ordering numbers is an important part of learning how to count in the younger classes. Here is a game with a deck of cards.
Year 3/4
Here is a great game using dice to order and position numbers on a number line.
Year 5/6
Fractions are an important part of the curriculum in Year 5/6. Here is a game using a deck of cards to make a whole number.
