Welcome Message from Assistant Principal
Dear Holy Trinity Community,
At the beginning of 2012, the IB PYP (Primary Years Program) as a whole, began a comprehensive review of all aspects of the programme.
The purpose of this extensive review was to critically analyse everything from the PYP's founding principles to the way that the PYP is implemented in the classroom.
The big question framing the review was “How are we making sure the Primary Years Programme (PYP) engages learners of today – and tomorrow?”
The review is now complete and in the Publication and Launch phase. The review process has confirmed that the pedagogical and philosophical concepts underpinning the PYP are as sound—and as relevant—today as they were when the programme first launched in 1997. Informed by the latest research and feedback from our schools, enhancements have been designed to ensure that the PYP evolves to become even better for students, easier for teachers to implement and more flexible for schools.
There are many exciting changes and additions to the “Enhanced PYP”, particularly an increased focus on Learner Agency. Learner agency refers to the level of control, autonomy, and power that a student experiences in an educational situation.
Learner agency can be manifested in the choice of learning environment, subject matter, approach, and/or pace.
The 3 broad areas that stem from agency are the areas of The Learner, Learner and Teaching and The Learning Community.
Some really exciting enhancements include the importance of play, student voice, action and an emphasis on the Early Years as the foundation for all future learning.
The IB have released a collection of resources designed to help school communities learn about the PYP and to become active in our students' education.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our athletics carnival tomorrow. May the sun shine brightly.
Warmest Regards

Encouraging healthy attitudes towards women
by Dr Rosina McAlpine
Recent events and current statistics highlight that as a nation we have a serious problem when it comes to domestic violence. While there’s no easy solution, together, we can do our part to stop violence against women. If you’re a parent or guardian, you can play an important role. Disrespect towards girls can begin in childhood, and we can break the cycle when we teach our children to be respectful and caring right from the start.
As parents, we have three main jobs:
- First, to love our children and build a strong lifetime bond
- Second, to keep them safe from harm until they can do that for themselves
- Third, to teach them all the skills they need to thrive in life and to make a positive difference in the world
Life skills approach to raising children
So what life skills do children need to learn when it comes to the issue of preventing violence against girls and women? As parents, we can talk with our kids about:
- Behaving respectfully towards others
- Communicating their needs using words and without the need to hit, snatch or shout
- Managing their emotions and their behaviours so as not to ‘fly off the handle’
Start the conversation about respect early
Start by responding to your child calmly when they are disrespectful to others. The following three-step communication approach can be used from early childhood through to teen years. Let’s put it into practice.
If a boy is making fun of his sister or a female friend:
- STOP: Respond calmly rather than react asking him to stop the teasing.
- EMPATHISE: Invite your son to see the behaviour through the eyes of his sister. ‘How do you think your sister/friend feels right now?’
- EDUCATE: Provide options such as ignoring his sister or friend if she’s annoying him or providing an appropriate social script he can use to communicate his thoughts such as, “I find it annoying when you don’t share the computer”
It’s a marathon, not a sprint
When it comes to gaining academic knowledge and learning skills, parents know it takes years of consistent effort from childhood through to adolescence. In the same way, parents can take a long-term approach to teaching life skills beginning right from toddler to teen.
Parents lead the way
Parents are powerful teachers and role models for the next generation. We can teach our children how to be respectful and kind to each other. By stopping disrespect and violence at the start we can play a crucial role in putting an end to violence against girls and women.
Resources you can use
The Stop it at the Start campaign provides parents, family members and others with information and practical resources to self-reflect, and talk to boys and girls aged 10-17 about being respectful and caring. You can find videos, guides and other resources to help you have conversations with your children at www.respect.gov.au/resources/talking-about-respect.
There is so much we can do in families to develop healthy attitudes toward women. Through modelling and teaching we can change entrenched attitudes and behaviours that will put an end to the cycle of violence against women.

Athletics Carnival
Our annual athletics carnival was rescheduled this week to Friday 31 May. Thank you to all the parents who have kindly offered their time with the running of the events. As the carnival was moved I am again in need of more volunteers. If you are able to assist during the day could you please get in contact with Mr Feerick as soon as possible.
During the carnival the students from Years 2-6 will participate in a rotation of track and field events. Age champions from each gender in this group will receive ribbons early next week after the carnival. There is an emphasis on participation through all events and giving every event a go. Kinder and Year 1 will take part in series of novelty events and track events. ELC is planned to join the carnival at 11am to run their races, followed by the annual 3-legged parent student races. If your child wishes to take part in the 800m events these will take part at 8.30am before school. You are able to drop off your child/ren directly to Curtin Oval for this event and the teachers will return your child/ren to school after these events.
As we have received rain earlier during the week, the students have been requested to bring tarp or a picnic rug to sit to use during the day. Please ensure they wear warm clothing as the weather forecast is for a cool start and may take a while to warm up. The students are encouraged to wear their house colours but runners will be required as it is a sports carnival.
South Weston Cross Country
On Monday 3 June a number of students from our school will represent our school at the South Weston Cross Country Carnival at Stromlo Park. Permission notes were emailed last week and payment is required via QKR. We wish all these athletes the best of luck!
Walk to School Week
This was a huge success with a large number of students taking steps towards a healthy lifestyle. On Friday morning the students celebrated the week with a range of activities on offer as they arrived to school and some lucky students took home prizes from the raffle draw. Thank you once again for getting behind this great initiative promoting safety in the community and ways to stay active.
