Welcome from our P and F President
Hi everyone! Welcome to Term 3 Week 9. Here's something I love to read every now and then:
When a flower doesn't bloom,
you fix the environment in which it grows,
not the flower.
(Alexander Den Heijer)
P&F Fundraising Priorities
Well, what a fabulous response to our fundraising priorities poll. We had almost 100 families respond, so thanks so much everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. Below is a list of comments. The P&F will now work through the list with the school. We are in the process of costing the top three, and I will report back to you as we progress through. My commitment to you all is that we will address each comment over the coming months, regardless of how many people raised it as a priority. I am confident there are things on the 'other' list we will be able to achieve, whether it be this year or over the next few years.
Top three priorities: |
More outdoor social spaces such as chairs, benches near basketball courts. (32%) |
Cubby house/play role structure in kitchen garden. (24%) |
Works to oval in cricket pitch area. (24%) |
|
Other |
Fencing – there were 13 comments regarding fencing around the school. |
Carpark – there were 6 comments regarding the pot holes, the need for more car spaces, and a path to allow safer access rather than going through the Church grounds. |
Upgrade/new bike cage – there were 5 comments to upgrade or replace the bike cage. |
Music – there were 2 comments for musical instruments/resources and a school band. |
Ground paintings and murals – there were 2 comments to freshen up the black top under the shade sails, like hop or spirals or a number pattern, for the kids to play and brighten up the area. |
Resurface gravel area – there were 2 comments to resurface where morning announcements take place, maybe softfall. |
Kids cooking facilities – there were 2 comments for cooking classes in our beautiful (underused) canteen kitchen. |
Upgrade playground equipment – there were 2 comments to either upgrade or replace the equipment, maybe a cubby where all kids can use it, or more options for the children to play. |
Fix puddle outside the ELC. |
Provide accommodations for our gifted and talented students as there are no policies or provisions for them. |
A climbing rope spider web for the playground. |
An environmentally friendly initiative, compost area or recycling initiative. |
Annex upgrade. |
Somewhere for the boys to play soccer without fear of accidentally hitting other kids. |
Cooling system in the school hall. |
Classroom resources? IT? Teaching equipment? |
Remove all gravel near the basketball courts and replace with turf. |
In the kitchen garden space, maybe a sensory option like at SJV. Quite low cost. |
Update the area where tennis is played. |
Improve PA system in the hall. |
Improvement of sandpit (shade sail, equipment to help facilitate imaginative play). |
Something to teach sewing or woodwork. |

Communications Coordinator, Fete Committee, Fundraising Committee
I have called for volunteers and had a couple of responses, thank you. If there is anyone else interested, or maybe a group of parents who think they can really nail an event (or Fete!!), please get in touch. It really is a great feeling to be giving back to such a wonderful community, and a great opportunity to meet some really cool people.

Staff Changes for Semester Two
At the end of this term, we sadly farewell Brigitta for the remainder of the year. We thank her sincerely for all her work this term, especially with the preparation for the Sacrament of First Eucharist. Annmarie Thomas, Classroom Support Teacher will also be taking leave for the remainder of 2019. The following are staff changes for Semester 2:
Emily Capper will be REC full-time and Rose Lee will be teaching in Kinder on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mary-Anne Winchester will continue one day a week giving numeracy support release in Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 on Tuesdays. Stephanie Leemhuis will now take Michael Feerick’s class one day a fortnight for his Sports Coordinator release and Kate Lategui will begin working at HT in Beck Casey’s class each Thursday for ICT Coordinator release. Catherine Cusack will extend her hours in Classroom Support and continue as Office Manager every Friday fortnight.
Car park Upgrade:
During the holidays the patches in the car park will be repaired. We will then be receiving a drawing form Northrop re our new car park traffic control pan. This work will then be completed in the December/January holidays as warmer weather is needed to carry out the works. This will include resurfacing, new car-parking spaces and line marking and marked areas for crossing and pick up/drop off arrangements. A reminder again please about using the drop off zone in the mornings- cars are still parking in this area and getting out of their cars. Carpark spaces are to be used for this to stop traffic congestion and hold ups in the morning please.
School Fencing:
Suggestions of school fencing comes up intermittently, and I know was mentioned in the P and F fundraising survey. We recently had cameras installed and security signage is still to come. A lot of vandalism has actually occurred in fenced areas- Kitchen Garden and the ELC play area; thus the fencing has not deterred people from accessing these areas. A lot of families also use our outside open areas during the weekend. Because of these reasons, a school fence will not be considered in the near future. The incredible cost for this is also money that could be spent to benefit our students in far greater ways.

Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) in the ELC
The ELC staff met recently to review our Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) for the next 12 months. One area of quality improvement identified by ELC staff has been the use of ICT in the classrooms. Over the last 12 months all ELC educators and teachers have been issued an iPad to capture student learning, document and communicate with families. Four new student iPads have been purchased to support the implementation of the ELSA pilot app and as a tool for research.
Next term both preschool classrooms will have interactive panels installed to enable whole class and small group use and viewing of various apps and websites.
We see the use of technology in the classroom as a valuable tool for learning and one of many tools students engage with. We also value family engagement in this area and hope that you can provide your thoughts and expectations around the use of ITC in the ELC. Please feel free to email us at elc.holytrinity@cg.catholic.edu.au

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.
Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
NAIDOC celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Under this year’s theme Voice, Treaty, Truth, NAIDOC Week is about the sharing of knowledge through voice, the desire for lasting agreements and an acknowledgement the truth.

NAIDOC Week 2019 at Holy Trinity will be celebrated in Week 10 – next week.
On Monday afternoon Year 3/4 Red will have their class liturgy focusing on the significance of NAIDOC Week.
On Tuesday afternoon the 3/4 grades will be having a session with an Aboriginal Storyteller, Larry Brandy. Larry will share some stories from the Aboriginal Dreamtime.
On Wednesday, during the middle session, the children will then split into vertical house groups. The groups will rotate through 4 or 5 activities. The activities will revolve around aboriginal land, language and culture.
Wednesday during the last session will see the same groups involved in a range of sporting games from the Yulunga sporting resource kit.
It will be a great celebration of all things Aboriginal and the significance of NAIDOC week.
We ask you to take some time next week to discuss the significance of NAIDOC Week with your children, and to pray for God’s blessings on our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters.
