- HOLY TRINITY FUNDRAISING: ENTERTAINMENT MEMBERSHIP
Dear Friends,
Yesterday marked the beginning of Lent and a time for us to prepare for the great celebration of Christ's Paschal Mystery at Easter. The ashes on Wednesday are obtained from the burning of palms of the previous Palm Sunday. Lent is a six week period (excluding Sundays) dedicated to prayer, giving alms, fasting and reflection. We encourage the students at Holy Trinity to focus on what they can do during Lent to help others; particular focus will be on fundraising for those affected with devastating loss over the summer months with the horrendous bush fires.
In our Parish during Lent there will be opportunity to attend the Stations of the Cross (Tuesday 7-7:30pm ) alternating with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st of March. Our Parish will also be hosting the Regional 2nd rite of Reconciliation on Wednesday 8th of April. During Week 10 will will also be sharing together prayer celebrations outlining the significant events in Holy Week and Easter.

Welcome from our School Board Chair
Dear Friends,
Thank you to everyone who attended the recent Parent Information Evening. It was great to reconnect with so many families and lovely to meet so many new members of our community.
As I mentioned during the Parent Information Evening, it is worthwhile pausing for a moment to consider and acknowledge the extraordinary work of all the teachers and professional staff at Holy Trinity.
Reflect, for a moment, on this: in the mornings we drop our children off at Holy Trinity with a hug, kiss and kind word. Much later in the day we return to school to find our children are safe, happy, have been well-cared for, and have been enriched intellectually, personally and spiritually. This is no small feat! Thank you to all the wonderful staff at Holy Trinity who care so well for our children each day - and who partner so effectively and closely with us to develop and raise our children. We are truly grateful for all you do.
Holy Trinity School Board
The Holy Trinity School Board is an advisory board through which the members of the Board seek to represent the views of parents and provide advice to the school across a range of matters including finances, enrolments, school policies, the curriculum, building and maintenance.
As you may be aware, the Board works closely with the P&F (and indeed has Cath Day or Mark Bauer represent the P&F on the Board) but it is a separate entity with distinct responsibilities. Whilst the Board assists with the governance of the school, the P&F coordinates and fundraises (important things, such as the uniform shop, the canteen, the walkathon, the review night, numerous BBQs throughout the year, and so much more).
The members of the Board are always happy to receive feedback from any member of our school community. The members of the Board for 2020 are:
- Board Chair – Scott Pearsall
- School Principal - Phillipa Brearley
- Assistant Principal - Katie Smith
- Religious Educator Coordinator - Emily Capper
- ELC Director – Cushla Sheehan
- Holy Trinity Parish Priest – Father John Woods
- P&F President– Cath Day
- P&F Vice President - Mark Bauer
- Board Secretary – Penny O’Connell
- Treasurer - Kathy Barbatano
- Parent Representatives – Jan Ridd, Andrew Peereboom and Lucy Vincent
- Parent Representative on the Catholic School Parents - Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn – Natalie Colbert
If you would like to contact me at any point, or would like to raise any matters with the Board, please feel free to email me at sbpearsall@gmail.com.
Wishing you all the very best for the rest of this term.
Ash Wednesday Mass & Launch of Project Compassion 2020
Yesterday we attended Ash Wednesday Mass at 9:30am. Staff, Students and Parishioners received a cross of ash on their foreheads. The ashes are a visible symbol of penance. The ashes are made from blessed palm branches, taken from the previous year's Palm Sunday Mass.
Ash Wednesday sees the season of Lent begin. This also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice. Each classroom will receive a Project Compassion box for their donations or you can donate online via the website at lent.caritas.org.au.
Along with Caritas this term we also will be fundrasing for the Bushfire appeal, more information to come!
On Tuesday many of our classes inquired into 'Why do we eat pancakes the day before Ash Wednesday?' It was fantastic to see the discussions and students findings around Shrove Tuesday! The best part was..... the eating of course!

Sacrament of Reconciliation 2020
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated in the Parish of the Transfiguration, North Woden on Thursday, 2nd April at 6:00 pm at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Curtin. On Tuesday night there was a Parent Information Meeting at the Parish Centre at Curtin.
Many thanks to the parents and carers who were able to attend, and to the teachers who attended to support our students.
I encourage the community to pray for these children as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation.

Stay and Play
Playgroup for pre-preschoolers and their families. Wednesday mornings from 9am-10.30am in the ELC Playground (weather permitting). Parents, grandparents, carers and children are all very welcome.
On Tuesday of Week 7 Year 3 – 6 will be spending an hour with author and adventurer Tim Cope. This is an exciting opportunity for Holy Trinity and it fits perfectly in with the philosophy of an IB school.
Tim will be doing a 50-minute presentations for young readers on his three-and-a-half-year, 10,000 kilometre odyssey from Mongolia to Hungary. This is an epic story filled with courage, stamina and heart and, above all, the extraordinary friendship between Tim and his best friend, a dog named Tigon.
The unlikely tale that unfolded has become a much-loved ABC TV series, a best-selling book (On the Trail of Genghis Khan), and has just been released as memoir for young adults.
To coincide with the release of Tim & Tigon, Tim will be touring schools across Australia from September 2019 until the end of 2020.

Playground Essential Agreement
Last week 2 students from each class met with myself to create a playground essential agreement. The students worked collaboratively to share ideas on ways we can make our playground a happy and safe place for everyone. This was then taken back to each class and shared with all of the students. There are several copies of the agreement displayed on the playground as a reference point for the students and teachers.
Kind Regards

Managing separation anxiety at school drop-offs

by Michael Grose
Going to school for most children is a positive experience however some children can struggle making the transition from their home environment to school. It’s naturally distressing to see your child upset at school drop-off but there is a great deal you can do to make school drop-offs easier for you and your child.
Breaking the cycle of separation anxiety at school
A child’s clinginess, crying or tantrums at school drop-off can be disturbing for you as a parent. Despite putting on a brave face, you can feel guilty that somehow you’re the cause of this behaviour. Unless something traumatic has occurred then leaving your child at school is a normal part of life, something your child will get used to. The following strategies may help eradicate your child’s tears and fears when you take them to school:
Tell the story
Prepare your child thoroughly each morning for what will happen when you leave your child at school. Repeat the story each morning before school so they can fully prepare for drop-off.
It takes two
Involve your child’s teacher in the drop-off process as they will be the person who must deal with an upset child. In extreme examples, at the start of term or after a long absence, a later starting time may give your child a chance to say goodbye in more relaxed circumstances.
Give me five
Rituals are both personal and reassuring so develop a special goodbye ritual that you consistently use when you leave your child each morning. Your special ritual may be simple such as a special wave or kiss, or fun such as a high five, low five, fist pump bursting into a hand explosion. Then leave quickly without stalling or looking back. Avoid making leaving a bigger deal than it what it is.
Reduce the rush
Is your child a morning star or night owl? Many children are slow starters in the morning, which can mean that they’re frequently rushed and arrive at school in highly anxious states. Do all you can to reduce morning stress, which may include earlier bed and waking times; laying out school clothes the previous evening and making minimal demands on their time.
This is the place
Location carries memory so choose carefully the place you say goodbye to your child. If a kiss or hug at the school-gate means a happy child, then you’ve probably found your goodbye place. Experiment with your goodbye location until you find one that works.
It’s your job
If goodbyes continue to cause tears, tantrums or clinginess consider, if possible, saying goodbye to your child at home and allowing another adult – your partner or another parent – to take your child to school.
If separation anxiety continues
If your child’s separation anxiety interferes with their concentration and learning, prevents them from making friends, is excessive and goes longer than a month, consider getting professional support. Separation anxiety left unchecked can lead to school refusal and other anxiety disorders later on.
For professional support consult with welfare teacher at your child’s school, your local general practitioner or local council for suitable health care professionals in the area.
